Correction to Self Assessment Questions scoring of item 5.b. Yes =
minus 10 No = 0
February 4, 2009
Correction to the Self Assessment Questions on the last page: Items 3c
and 3d are valued at 10 points, not 5 points. This revision has been made to
the last page of all versions of the RBA 101 Workshop Material 1.9,
including the 53, 44, 29 and 10 page versions.
Decrease from
56 to 53 pages (to save paper and remove less used material).
Note: 44, 29 and 10 page versions also updated to 1.9.
New cover page showing Results-Based Accountability™ (RBA) instead of
Results Accountability. This signals the move to accept the RBA/OBA
acronyms.
Population and Performance Talk to Action pages are now shown in both
schematic and 7 question form side by side on a single page. This
facilitates discussion of these two different ways of the describing the RBA
thinking process. See pages 11 and 28.
Slides removed: The generic list of results for children and families,
the Boston turn the curve example (which is available in the book on page
102).
Other slides changed: Removed input/output words from bottom of page 18.
Fixed example on bottom of page 30 to read "% initiated within 24
hours," to reflect the appropriate measure for child protection
investigations. On the bottom of page 31 added arrow showing "shortcut" from
Results to Role, which is easier for organizations to complete who do not
wish to use all of the intervening detail.
Removed slides: The budget cut slide has been replaced by a more
sophisticated look at RBA and budget cutting.
Removed Education reform summary slide, available in the book on page 119.
Removed the VT Lead example, also available in the book on page 62.
Removed the "Trading Outcome Accountability for Fund Flexibility" slide as
this is rarely discussed. Click here
to see the paper on this website.
Minor edits to the Turn the Curve instructions (e.g. forecasts now to
2012).
Perhaps most important of all is the inclusion of a new (still marked
draft) version of the RBA Implementation Self Assessment Questions as the
last page. This substitutes for the version shown in Appendix A of the book.
This new version is more explicitly for government and nonprofit
organizations and also allows a score to be computed. Comments welcome.
Decrease from 60 to 56 pages.
This is a further attempt to save paper but paring out non-essential pages,
while making room for some new material.
Significant changes include:
New cover page showing DVD cover and ordering information.
Addition of Christchurch, NZ as primary example of results for a whole
population.
Replacement of the CA derived Population Talk to Action schematic on page 11
with the more generic version used in figure 3.2 in the book.
Addition of the Population 7 Questions top of page 12.
Removal of the Health Clinic performance example and replacement with
Pediatric Practice performance measures.
Update the Fire Dept performance examples in the lower two quadrants.
Removal of the "Different Org Chart" slide on page 44
Removal of the three "Simplified View" pages 53-55
Addition of the "Lay vs. Tech. Definition" slide and the "Choose 3 measures
at each level" slide before page 28.
Decrease from 71 to 60 pages. This is an
attempt to save paper and respond to the people who gasp when they hear that
the basic workshop workbook is 71 pages. (Strength of gasps will be reduced
by 15.5%, assuming a linear relationship; more if the relationship is
exponential.)
A 44 page reduced version is also available.
Specific changes include:
Basic performance pages (4 Quadrants and 7 Questions) on pages 28 and 29
completely recomposed.
Performance Measures 5 Step Process on pages 51 and 52 completely updated
from book Appendix G
New slide on page 32 showing the two part (population and performance)
presentation approach recommended for all presentations.
Self Assessment Questions (page 63) adds the question "Have you turned any
curves?"
"Other performance measurement examples" shown 6 to a page.
Less used slides cut from version 1.6: 34B, 36B, 43All, 45All, 50T, 51T,
53T, 54T, 58all, 59all (If you wish to compare to version 1.6 click
here.)
Other changes on pages 4, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, 30, 31 and 35.

of the "Leaking Roof" example before page 11; Minor improvements to
the Population and Program "Turn the Curve" Exercise one-page
instructions and format descriptions.
December 4, 2002
For the complete 101 Workshop Materials (90 pages): delete the Language of Accountability
3 pages and substitute the 2 page Tool for Choosing a Common Language (as pages
74 a, b and c). The full Language of Accountability is available from the home
page of raguide.org.
September 14, 2002
Add new copying option: "Key pages" which is the smallest set of
handout material, a bare minimum 9 pages. (Down from 90... not too bad!)
Edit "Characteristics of Good Performance Accountability Systems"
to say just "... Good Accountability Systems" so that the overhead can
be used for both population and program accountability.
Significantly reduced the download time (by two thirds) for all 101 Workbook
material.
September 4, 2002
Revise Definitions (page 4) to improve the definition of performance
measures by adding a reference to service system performance. Definitions
change from:
"A measure of how well agency or program service delivery is
working" to "A measure of how well a program, agency or service
system is working."
Revise Prototype Progress Report to improve wording of second type of
progress from
"Population indicator curve" to "Population Well-being."
Note these changes did not appear in items A2, A3 and A4 until September
13, 2002.
March 1, 2002
Add 3 budget pages from San Mateo County after page 75 - example of exemplary performance budgeting format.
Add Prototype Results Progress Report: 4 Kinds of Progress
